What Temperature Should I Set My Heater To In The Winter?

February 8, 2022 | Blog

We love the colder weather that winter brings each year, but we don’t love the higher energy costs that come with keeping our homes warm. After all, it can be tough to keep your home at a comfortable temperature in the winter without sweating a little at the cost when the monthly energy bill comes.

At Foulks Southern Air, we get asked all the time what the magic thermostat number is to balance comfort and cost. That’s why today we’re going to reveal what the best temperature for your heater is as well as other tips and tricks to stay warm this winter.

The Best AC Winter Temperature

Most homeowners keep their thermostats set between 70 and 72 degrees in the winter or even year-round. But what’s comfortable isn’t always best – for your wallet or for your HVAC system! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the ideal winter indoor temperature is 68 degrees. Likewise, the best summer temperature is 78 degrees.

These temperatures are considered ideal because they are the most energy-efficient settings for your HVAC system. While 68 degrees may seem cold enough to leave icicles around your home, it’s actually the most cost-effective temperature for your home in the winter because your heater doesn’t have to work as hard to produce enough heat. Keeping your house at 68 degrees will save you money by making your heater more efficient without really sacrificing your comfort.

Tips for Staying Cozy Inside

If you’ve been keeping your home at a toasty 72 degrees all winter, turning the temperature down four degrees will likely be a bit uncomfortable. However, there are plenty of ways to keep warm in your home until 68 degrees becomes your new normal, including:

  • Layering up
  • Wearing socks
  • Getting cozy under a warm blanket
  • Letting as much sunlight into your home as possible
  • Using your fireplace (if you have one)

Doing all of these things will help you stay cozy all winter long, and soon you won’t even feel as if your home is colder than usual. What you will notice, though, is the lower number on your energy bill every month!

Keep Costs Low Without Sacrificing Your Comfort

If 68 degrees is simply too cold for you, it’s ok. After all, staying comfortable in your home is important. Luckily, there are several ways to save on energy costs without making any drastic changes to your winter heater temperature. One of the common ways to save money at any time of year is to lower your thermostat any time you leave the house – you can’t be uncomfortable if you’re not there! In the winter, turning your thermostat down a few degrees while you’re away will make a difference when it comes to your energy bill.

You can also save money in the long run by replacing your heater. While heater replacement is expensive, you’ll save money in the long run because your HVAC system will be more energy-efficient and less likely to break down.
